GMP Law pioneered ground-breaking class action against HINO Motors

In a significant move as a defender of consumer rights, GMP Law took a leading role in seeking justice for owners and lessees of HINO diesel vehicles. As the first firm to bring a claim in Australia against the global vehicle manufacturer, Hino Motors Sales Australia Pty Ltd and Hino Motors Ltd, GMP Law has showcased its commitment to ensuring corporate accountability.

Pioneering the case

From 2022 to 2024, GMP Law initiated and drove forward the class action against HINO Motors. This action addresses the alleged misreporting of engine performance data, specifically relating to fuel efficiency and emissions in their diesel vehicles. This crucial legal action has laid the groundwork for potential significant compensation for affected vehicle owners and lessees.

International collaboration

GMP Law partnered with the renowned US firm Lieff Cabraser Heimann & Bernstein in bringing this case. This collaboration is significant, as Lieff Cabraser has successfully initiated and settled a similar class action against HINO Motors in the United States. The joint effort highlights the global nature of the issue and the shared commitment to holding HINO Motors accountable.

Path forward

Although GMP Law laid the foundational work for this landmark case, the Victorian Supreme Court has decided that another law firm will take it forward. This decision does not detract in any way from  GMP Law’s critical role in highlighting the issues and preparing a robust case for all affected parties.

Impact and potential outcomes

The class action aims to hold HINO accountable for misleading owners and lessees about vehicle performance. If successful, compensation could be substantial, potentially covering a significant portion of the vehicle’s purchase price, and additional expenses incurred by owners in servicing and maintaining alleged defective vehicles.

GMP Law’s pioneering work, supported by its international collaboration with Lieff Cabraser Heimann & Bernstein, has set the stage for success in this significant class action and underscored the impact of class actions in addressing global misconduct.
