As Special Counsel at GMP Law, Paula brings over 31 years of legal experience to the firm. She specialises in personal injury law, focusing on medical negligence, public liability, product liability, institutional child abuse, and ethical legal matters.
Paula’s career is defined by her dedication to holding the healthcare system accountable and advocating for vulnerable individuals. Throughout the years, she has emerged as a leading advocate for victims of medical negligence, tirelessly working to achieve meaningful outcomes for her clients.
Paula led a landmark medical negligence case against a doctor accused of groping patients, which prompted broader scrutiny of his actions. Later, she commenced a multimillion-dollar lawsuit against an anaesthetist who allegedly infected women with hepatitis C. She also played a pivotal role in securing compensation for a patient affected by a chemotherapy error.
One of Paula’s most rewarding cases was a birth injury claim for a child with catastrophic injuries. She pursued the case diligently, ensuring the child’s long-term care needs were met and offering the family much-needed peace of mind. Paula is also proud of her role in the class action for women injured by Dow Corning breast implants. Her strategic approach led to the successful compensation of Australian women, making them the first in the world to receive such compensation from the company.
Beyond her legal work, Paula is deeply committed to improving healthcare ethics and standards. She has contributed to this field through her roles on the Western Health Institutional Ethics Committee and the Human Research & Ethics Committee. In 2016, she was appointed to the Northern Health Board, further demonstrating her dedication to high-quality healthcare. In 2018, Paula joined the Victorian Voluntary Assisted Dying Review Board, where she played a key role in overseeing the implementation of voluntary assisted dying legislation, ensuring its compliance with relevant laws.
Paula’s legal expertise, leadership in high-profile cases, and unwavering commitment to social justice have made her an invaluable asset to GMP Law. Through her work and mentorship, she continues to inspire and shape the next generation of lawyers in the firm.
In the spirit of reconciliation GMP Law acknowledges the Traditional Custodians of country throughout Australia and their connections to land, sea, and community. We pay our respects to their Elders past, present, and emerging, and extend that respect to all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples today.
