Going to the hospital for treatment of an eye infection should give you peace of mind, not make things worse.
Unfortunately, this was the case for one Sydney man, who claims the Sydney Eye Hospital left him blind and in unbearable pain after what was supposed to be a simple assessment.
The case
According to ABC News, 58-year-old Giovanni Busa was left screaming and crying after what should have been a simple "tap and inject" assessment in 2015. This procedure generally consists of three injections, but Busa claims he received seven and then was wheeled to the emergency department for surgery.
"I started screaming and screaming for my sister to come in … and I just told her, 'Just kill me, kill me'," Busa told ABC News. "The pain was unbearable."
Busa is seeking compensation for negligence to the NSW Supreme Court, not only for the pain and suffering, but also because he claims this specific procedure was never filed into his medical records.
The news source stated that the hospital apologised to Busa, staying the following:
"Please accept an apology on behalf of the hospital that the events on this day were not escalated at the time of the procedure and that you felt that the communication you received during this time caused further distress to you and your family."
This specific case was then taken up by the Health Care and Complaints Commission, an organisation dedicated to protecting the health and safety of the general public, to review the hospital, but it found no concerns from a clinical aspect.
Today, Busa claims that he has been living with multiple complications in his right eye, including blindness, and believes the initial injection left him in this state. Because there are no medical records on file for his case, he's finding it difficult to take up a medical negligence claim with a professional. He's taking his own action until he can find the right assistance.
